I did WHAT?!?!!?

Posted by Ava Larkin on Monday, August 27, 2012, In : Travels in South Korea

So, last night instead of making coffee I decided to use one of the packets in the cabinets left from the previous tenant.  BAD move... within 5 minutes of having just tasted the powder mix my vertigo was so bad it was like someone had hit me on my head and I was face first in the toilet.  I spent the next couple hours actually laying on the bathroom floor due to the frequency of purging.  If I tried t even lift my head the vertigo would be so bad that it'd make me sick again!  Finally I was ...

Running the Ramyun off...

Cool rusted bicycle I saw while jogging through the alleys

It's weird... when I lived in the states I could barely get up before 10 am and wouldn't go to bed until 3-4 am, but now I find I'm comfortable getting up around 6 and going to bed before midnight.  Because of this I decided to start jogging in the morning.  Which turned into jogging last night, too and going to the park for the first time.  BTW... the weather decided to brighten up here and it's been sunny all weekend and at night the...

Friday morning blues....

Posted by Ava Larkin on Saturday, August 25, 2012, In : Travels in South Korea

Another rainy day in Yongmoon

Yesterday (Friday) went a lot better.  Although, it started out poorly. I spent so much time working on a lesson for the kids only for my Ko-teacher to tell me it was wrong, which made me really frustrated and left me feeling inadequate.  Which is silly, right?  How many American teachers come here actually knowing enough Korean to get by?  I didn't go to school for it, so I shouldn't be so hard on myself for not understanding everything the ...

And it's KUDZU NOODLES!!!!

We didn't think of this because...?!?!?

Here are pics of some of the meals I've made for myself.  Contrary to my belief that I could never enjoy Kimchi again (long story), I am thoroughly enjoying it and it has become a staple at every meal.

Rice with Gogi, seasoned black beans, dried and
marinated anchovies, and kimchi

Saturday morning breakfast of champions:  kimchi
ramyun with gogi, egg, and more kimchi

I'll write more about Friday later... time to get back to lesson...

Yecheon... the corner of where I wait for my Ko-Teacher to pick me up

My students’ favorite questions this week were… (BTW, if you’ve watched the Korean Drama BIG , then you may get the Ava Teacher reference my students are using).

  • Ava teacher, where are you from?
  • Ava teacher, do you like KPop?  Who’s your favorite singer in Girl’s Generation?
  • Ava teacher, who’s your favorite actor?
  • Ava teacher, do you have a boyfriend?
  • Ava teacher, how did you learn to speak Korean?

First day on the job...

Posted by Ava Larkin on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, In : Travels in South Korea

Heur had me meet him in front of the Tae Kwon Do school in the morning.  From there we headed to Yongmoon Elementary via a beautiful, long and winding road through the Yecheon countryside.  There were farms with fruit and rice to one side and the other traced the outskirts of the Nakdonggang River.  The road meanders gracefully through the small towns and as we passed the sloping foothills of the mountains I could see ancient pagodas, Buddah, and historic markers peaking out among the foliage...

Getting to Korea...

Posted by Ava Larkin on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, In : Travels in South Korea

Sunday morning around 4:30 saw me crawling into the truck with mom and dad.  I was so happy that both of them took me to the airport, but cried like a complete dork when kissing them goodbye.  The plane trip went smoothly, until I got to Korea and found out my bags were still in NYC.  Thankfully, my bags will be delivered to my school tomorrow morning.

Monday night I arrived to Incheon Airport in Seoul and the hostel my agency had booked turned out to be pretty great!  It was right ne...
